Discerning God in the local economy
From an article in Journal of Missional Practice
Redeemer Community Church is a church plant in the Bayview area of Pasadena. Mark Lau Branson, one of the leaders of the church, describes their ‘Retreat on the Street’ practice which has helped them link the scriptures from Luke 10 (the seventy sent out into the marketplace) and Acts 16 (the vision of the Macedonian man and subsequently meeting Lydia, a local businesswoman) with their journeys into neighbourhood.
There were experiences of discernment and disappointment and surprising twist and turns.
Mark describes an unexpected approach from some local businesses who were drawn to the church’s work with young people and young offenders, and the transforming conversations which emerged from that.
"We're a tiny group of maybe 25 on Sundays and yet we ended up with a number of business people who said we're interested in working with you. What stunned us was none of this was our initiative."
