Adoption 2 246A mother’s answered prayer

From an article by The Salvation Army

When Cindy was 16, she met and started dating a young man and then found herself pregnant.

After months of very painful decision making, she decided that adoption was the best route. She knew how important it was to have an intact, very loving family so that the child would not be at any disadvantage.

Back in the 1960s, teenage pregnancy was a very shameful thing. She and her parents hid it from neighbours and relatives. She moved into a Salvation Army facility. (In 1887, The Salvation Army opened its first “rescue home for women,” primarily caring for young expectant mothers.)

Her son Tom was born and she held him for four days. It was the most difficult thing she ever did. She just told him how much she loved him and would love him every day of her life. She prayed for him. She really felt she was doing what God wanted her to do.

Later, Tom's new parents explained to him that they adopted him. They said it in a very positive way, so he felt very special. He had that stability throughout his life. He felt like God gave him his parents.

When he was in his 40s, he searched the internet and found a redacted record with his birth mother’s maiden name on it. He sat on this for 10 years but then a cancer scare prompted him to find his mother via The Salvation Army. Staff found Cindy's records and contacted her. After some time, dealing with this shock and discussing the implications with her husband Bob, Cindy decided to contact Tom.

They met up and the connection was instant.

Cindy's prayer was as that God would find the perfect Christian family who valued education. And God gave her a peace about that. Tom's life with his adoptive parents was parallel to her life with her husband and how they raised their children.

And not only that but she met grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
