RTKendall 246What would R T Kendal say to his younger self?

From a podcast by J John

R T Kendall, now 89, has authored over 50 books, was the minister at Westminster Chapel for 25 years and even today is busier than ever, preaching and mentoring around the world. J John, who has known R T Kendall for nearly 40 years, interviewed him and asked him having been in ministry 70 years, what would he say to his younger self? This is how he answered:

I realize that I've got some degrees but I would say to young men today that I would not recommend Seminary. I think of Acts 4:13. When the Sadducees saw the boldness of Peter and John they were amazed. They noticed that they were uneducated but they had been with Jesus.

My advice to anybody is two things - know your Bible and pray a lot.

Know your Bible. What worries me J John is that people don't know their Bibles. For many preachers the only time they read the Bible is when they want a sermon. They don't know the Word. People don't know the Word. If I had a legacy my deepest desire is that people would start taking the Bible seriously.

When we pray we get to know God's ways. Two things God wants us to know - His Word and His ways. His Word is the Bible and how do you get to know anybody's ways? By spending time with them. My wife, Louise knows my ways. My son TR knows my ways. So how much do you pray?

I cannot emphasize this enough. Know your Bible and pray a lot and God will use you to exceed all the PhDs and Seminary degrees.

[From later in the interview]:

I happen to believe that there will be an awakening before the end. I've believed it for 60 years and won't try to explain now why but I believe it. In my opinion, there will be no superstars. The next move of God will be ordinary people who are unafraid to witness, to talk about Jesus.

At the height of the Great Awakening in New England in Massachusetts, Jonathan Edwards commented that the whole town was full of talk about God. Can you imagine that day would come in London? People on the Underground all talking about God. That's not today - there's nothing near that but I happen to believe that the next thing on God's calendar in my opinion is not the second coming but the awakening of the Church.
