How to tell your story better
From a video by Pioneers Post
Here are golden rules of storytelling according to Pioneers Post - distilled from their “Good Stories” event, which brought together top communicators in the social enterprise space:
Use storytelling to build trust
Stories aren’t just for marketing - they’re for connection. Differentiate yourself. Start with the 'Why' - explain the 'Who' and the 'How' later. Let your values and personality shine through. People respond to real stories, not polished perfection.
Stop seeing the platform as a chance to talk
Assumptions are lethal. Instead of pitching, ask questions. Then ask more. Talk with your audience. Discover as much as you can. Let go of control and listen - even if it feels uncomfortable. Learn to listen.
Define your audience precisely
Think about what your target audience really cares about. Don’t assume you know who they are or what they care about. Research what they read, where they hang out online, and what motivates them.
Be specific about your impact
Share tangible results that people can relate to. Use small, emotionally resonant details that people can connect with. For example, The Soap Co. uses the tagline: “Every bottle sold creates one hour of employment”.
Focus your message
Avoid broadcasting in every direction. Tailor your content to the platforms and people that matter most. Repeat that one clear message across all.
Keep it simple
It's not about what you choose to do but what you choose NOT to do.
Make your story actionable
Inspire people to do something - whether that’s buying, sharing, supporting, or joining your cause.
These principles are especially powerful for social enterprises and advocacy campaigns.
